Hello and welcome to all Parents and Carers. This page has been compiled by The Friends of Bishops Cannings School especially to provide you with some information about The Friends who form a major part of our school life.
Why do we have a PTA?
We are fortunate at Bishops Cannings to have a PTA that is and has been an integral part of the school community for over 20 years. In its time the Friends has raised thousands of pounds, which has been spent on equipment and resources to enhance our children’s educational experience and the school’s facilities.
Most recently we have raised money for playground equipment and school sports kit. However, the Friends is about much more than simply fundraising. The Friends exists to provide closer links between home and school and it is an excellent way to bring staff, parents and friends together socially in support of the school, working towards a common goal. It’s fun too - just ask any of our committee members or helpers.
All parents, carers and members of the school community are encouraged to get involved, even if they only have a small amount of time available. All families are automatically members of the Friends when their child joins our school.
What do the Friends do?
We feel there’s no better way to get involved with your child’s school life and be able to contribute in such a direct and hands-on way, than by joining the Friends.
There are lots of ways you can help and support your child through the Friends. Offering to help at events or at other times during the year is so valuable. It doesn’t matter if you can’t help on a regular basis, or even if you can not come into school. There are often jobs that can be done from home if you have half an hour to spare. We really couldn’t achieve what we do without the behind the scenes help that we receive. Some of our most popular fundraising events have been our Cake Stalls, Quiz Nights, Easter Bingo, the school Fair and our Community Christmas Fayre. Not all of our events are run as fundraisers though and we often arrange non-profit making events such as the Leavers BBQ and subsidise educational visits eg. Wiltshire Scrapstore, Circomedia and The Planetarium.
And if you don’t want to help the Friends directly that’s no problem. You can simply contribute by coming along and enjoying the events we put on throughout the year.
- Charitable Status
The Friends of Bishops Cannings School is a registered charity. As a charity we must abide by Charity Commission rules and regulations. Our constitution sets out the rules about how we operate as a PTA. If you would like to see a copy of the constitution, please contact one of the Committee members. Being a registered charity enables the Friends to:-
- receive charitable donations from local and national companies
- apply to grant-making charitable trusts
- receive donations made through payroll giving and company matched funding schemes
- apply for Gift Aid
- How do I join the Friends?
It’s easy to join the Friends. Membership is open, and indeed automatic, to parents and carers of pupils, representatives of the school and its associated bodies.
The Friends committee is elected each year at an Annual General Meeting to which everyone is invited. Our next AGM will be held in the school hall on 11th October 2016 at 7.30 pm
Meetings of the Friends committee are then held once or twice per term and all are welcome to attend. You don’t have to be an elected member. The more the merrier! Keep an eye on school noticeboards, newsletters and this website for details and dates of meetings. We look forward to seeing you!
